Cruise Line and Seafarer Medicals

We are an approved Cruise Line medical centre and can provide Pre-Employment Medical Examinations (PEME) required by all leading cruise lines. Our location in London’s Harley Street medical district is easily accessible from all main train stations and the US Embassy.

Undergoing a Cruise Medical is necessary for all new staff or rehires working as seafarers on a cruise ship, from Activity & Entertainment Staff, Medical Team Members, the Housekeeping & Hospitality Crew to the Deck & Engineering Departments.

Cruise Line Medicals is run by Dr Adam Hazell, a highly experienced private GP, who is supported by his Practice Manager Alison Lewin. Between them, they have over 15 years’ experience in providing Pre-Employment Medical Examinations for all leading cruise ship lines.

How much does a Cruise Line Medical cost?

Our Cruise Line Medicals are competitively priced and cost from £350, depending on the cruise line medical requirements. This includes all tests and examinations. It doesn’t cover travel vaccinations, but we are able to provide them for you. Get in touch in advance of your appointment and we can advise you whether travel vaccinations are required and how much we charge.

What vaccinations can you provide?

For an extra cost, we can provide a comprehensive range of childhood and travel vaccinations, including MMR, Tetanus and Yellow Fever. Call us on 020 4530 7040 to find out which ones you require during your contract.

Is a Cruise Ship PEME necessary?

A Cruise Line Medical is usually required before you begin work on a cruise ship in any capacity or are rehired, as certificates typically last two years. Conditions vary between different cruise lines, but we have many years’ experience in this field and are able to fulfil all the necessary requirements.

Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

Passport or photo ID

Immunisations certificates

Medical letters covering current medication or medical conditions

Your glasses, if needed, as you will have to remove contact lenses if worn for an eye test. We will need to test your eyesight both with and without visual aids (glasses or contact lenses)

When will I get my results?

If your results are normal, then we can offer a quick and efficient turnaround and you can expect your results within 24 and 48 hours of your appointment. In some cases, though, we have to request more information from your GP or further blood tests.

When the medical report results are fully complete, we email the medical report to you and to your nominated contact at the cruise line. If agreed, we also send to your recruiter/hirer, too.

Where is the clinic located?

Located just off Harley Street, our clinic is easy to get to from all the major train stations in London. Our nearest Tube station is Regent’s Park and we are a ten-minute walk from Oxford Street Tube station. If you are paying a visit to the US Embassy, we are approximately 40 minutes away (take the Victoria Underground Line from Vauxhall to Oxford Circus).

What to Expect

Before your appointment

If you’re in receipt of your medical report, please familiarise yourself with what will be required. If you are unsure of any of these requirements, please call us on 020 4530 7040. It’s important you are fully prepared for your medical.

You must fast for 8 hours prior to your appointment. This means no food or milky drinks, but ensure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
If you are diabetic, contact us for advice as fasting is not advised
If you have any past or present medical conditions, please call us prior to your appointment to discuss whether a letter from your GP or hospital doctor is required. There are certain medical conditions that can prevent you from working at sea, so it is useful to discuss this prior to your appointment.
If you are are on medication (excluding oral contraception), please could you ask your GP to provide a letter documenting the name of your medication, dosage and confirmation that you have been prescribed enough medication to cover the length of your employment with the cruise liner.
If you have had any previous surgery or been admitted to hospital, a letter outlining the details is usually required
In the week leading up to your appointment, we advise you eat healthily and drink alcohol in moderation, as we will be testing liver function and cholesterol levels during your medical

Medical conditions

The following are a list of conditions that may affect your ability to work onboard ship as outlined in International Maritime Laws & Regulations:

Epilepsy
Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus
Certain STDs and STIs
Depression, Anxiety, Panic Attacks or other psychiatric illness (if you’re currently taking medication for these conditions or have done so in the past year, please get in touch with us immediately)
Pregnancy
Scoliosis (maximum of 20°)
Body Mass Index of 30-35 (if you’re BMI is over 35, please get in touch with us to discuss prior to travelling to the clinic)
Asthma (if you’re currently taking medication). If you had asthma in childhood or take ad hoc medication, then you will need to have a letter from your GP. Get in touch to discuss this further if unsure.

Required vaccinations

Please call the Practice Manager on 020 4530 7040 for confirmation of what vaccinations are required. You can obtain these records from your GP.

If you have not received these vaccinations, we can organise them for you but there will be an extra charge.

Things to bring to your appointment

It is essential you bring these with you, as we are unable to provide you with your Cruise Medical without them.

Your vision will be checked, so if you wear glasses and/or contact lenses, please ensure you can remove them for your eyesight test. If you wear glasses, you must bring all your pairs in with you. Alternatively, please bring a recent (less than 3 months) unaided vision test with you to your appointment
You must bring your passport with you
Please bring in all immunisation certificates (can be copies or printouts) and medical letters, as covered in the sections above

What takes place during your medical

During your medical, you can expect the following:

Blood and urine tests
Chest x-ray
Hearing and eye tests
A top-to-toe examination as outlined in your PEME documentation.
